Modus - The quest for game modes

Join in on a genre hopping adventure  as you collect new game modes and genres to defeat the big bad.

Made solo for the Big Mode game jam 2023

Made in Godot 4 (Might take a while to load for certain browsers / OS - can download the other versions below)

Each game genre changes the gameplay of the game as you swap between these modes to traverse the map and defeat enemies.

For example, the 2D platformer mode allows you to jump over enemies to one-hit kill them, but you get killed instantly by touching enemies or falling into pits.

For other genres... (uhh..  do not look at the tags, they  spoil them) play and find out!

Controls

you can also view the controls in the options:

WASD/ Arrow keys / Joystick/ D-pad to move and jump

Also Space/ Bottom button ( Playstation X, Xbox A, Nintendo B) for jump

Genre Switch: keyboard X , Top button (Playstation Triangle, Xbox Y, Nintendo X)

Action 1 (changes based on genre) : E/Mouse Click / Left button (Playstation Square,Xbox X, Nintendo Y)

Action 2 (changes based on genre) : Q/ Right button (Playstation Circle ,Xbox B, Nintendo A)

If you get stuck and are unable to move, you can reset the game state by pressing the 'K' button on the keyboard.

You can check how each game mode works in the menu. Save/Load are also built in the menu - double click / press confirm on controller to save or load.

I found a way out to get the super secret treasure :(

Found an occurrence where a previous pitfall is visible later on in the game above the player [I.E. after second JRPG boss]. Due to the positioning of the torch then it can be assumed by many players that this area should be accessible as it potentially looks like a power up on first glance. The problem regarding this is that since the death trigger has not been encoded to only kill the player when falling and/or during times where the player requires to take a path under previous pitfalls then such death triggers are not disabled then  jumping to such areas in 2D platformer mode results in an instant death which have resulted in some unnecessary deaths. I.E.:

Additionally, I managed to get stuck after moving from JRPG mode and getting stuck in a wall in 2D platforming mode. I could change the game genre one more time to metroidvania mode but for some reason then after this then I was not able to game the game genre back to JRPG mode. After pressing K to reset my position then for some reason then it still refused to allow me to change game genres. I have provided a screenshot of the wall that I was stuck in that has resulted in this softlock [I haven't been able to recreate the exact issue which has prevented myself from changing genres after using K in this exact spot]:

However, the issues in regards to getting stuck can be easily recreated if you change genres in this spot:

Additionally, changing genres in this unassuming spot can result in an unexpected death for different players as changing from JRPG mode to platforming mode removes the floor and resulting in the player falling into a death pit:

Perhaps a minor visual aid should be considered in JRPG mode which slightly distinguishes which sections/platforms will be removed and/or unsafe to stand on after switching game genres

Additionally, this visual-cue/arrow can and has resulted in players inadvertently jumping down this death pit in belief that this is the correct path before being indicated that this should only be accessed after acquiring the metroidvania cartridge:

very mode, but still needs some big

totally can go out of bound in turn based mode. :-D

Hey.  Can you tell me how to remove green and blue blocks in the game gun princes (I) I am in the room where I got a blue mushroom. I have already reached the room with lasers but I have a shotgun and I can't jump higher

I'm sorry that I'm writing to you, but I wrote to Yala and I haven't received an answer yet.  I know you've played this game before and I hope you can help me play it based on your experience

I would be very grateful for your help

omg I was almost worried for jumpscare in the very end X"D

I LOVE IT, I'm so amazed by the game direction, art, and music!! <3 <3 <3

I don't really see the point of having lives and game over screen, since we ended up being put back into the checkpoint regardless. Love the idea tho!

It's very easy for the player character to get stuck in a platform, softlocking the game. Please add a respawn option.

Hi, thanks for the feedback, added a respawn button (press k to reset).

Nice work, like the idea! The character falls really fast (and I suck at platformers) so I died a lot haha but it was fun :)

It loads forever :/

Ah, sorry about that. It is usually an issue with Godot 4 web games for certain browsers - takes a minute or 2 at most in certain cases. Refreshing should also help. You can download the offline version in the downloads section for your OS.  Which browser / OS are you using? Thanks!
